...but in a different way and a different place in life.
We were once 12. He was one of the smartest guy I've ever met. Well, to be fair, I was only 12 and have not seen much. He's always scoring As, very hard working, diligent, a lil bit geeky, the quiet shy type, tall, wears specs, and at that age, I always have a soft spot for such guys. He's smart, what is there not to like? I observed him in such detail that I even know he had this habit of drinking water everytime after he visits the washroom and his bottle is the huge 1.5ltr kind of bottle. Our brothers were friends in kindergarten and we had tuitions together.
After primary school, we ended up in different secondary schools. We kept in touch for a bit, we sent each other Christmas/CNY cards every single year with a short note accompanying the card. Every single year until..don't know what happened. I don't know much of him but I knew he went to Monash to do engineering on a scholarship. My dad knows his dad, so words travel through that channel.
We're now 24. And world's apart. He's currently working in Singapore. And his starting pay is more than 3 times my starting pay in MYR. Still smart as ever, but has gotten very talkative. We met for dinner and would you believe me if I tell you I didn't speak more than 10 sentences when I was with him?
So yea. We are at the same geographical location, but we got here in a different way and arrived at a different place in life. I like how he said wow, we're getting old. 12 years. It just hit me that the last time we spent that much time together was 12 years ago.
I like how I can just call an old friend out at such short notice and he'll travel 40 mins to have dinner with me, a dinner that he said could have paid for his meals for 2 days.
