"Sitting in calls and taking notes is not work!"

"Sitting in calls and taking notes is not work!"

Yes, I admit. Sitting in calls and taking notes is not work, to some extend. But it is in this 1 hour discussions that I learnt the most, sometimes extended to 2 hours.

You send or accept the meeting invite. Book the room for your call discussion. Do some background search on the people who will be in the call or review items for discussion. Gather your laptop and set up the phone. Check that the numbers are right. Take out your trusty pen and notebook. Get ready to say your name and press the pound or hash key at the tone. "Cassie"

Then you enter into a discussion. A discussion about something that matters and something that is close to your heart. Talent. Sometimes it feels like you enter into another world, learning about another country's talent practices, the employees' culture, success stories and pain points of Talent. Engaging in open and interesting discussions. And even if all you do is just sit in calls and take notes, you learn a lot. You gain insights. Every time I do, I feel like a sponge. Just sit, listen and absorb. I've spoken to people from the London office, the Shanghai office, and all over the United States of America (Chicago, Texas, New York, Boston, etc). If I count them as travelling, I've been to:

Singapore
Thailand
Vietnam
Indonesia
Philippines
Canada
Shanghai
Hong Kong
Poland
Prague
Slovakia
London
Glasgow
South Africa
U.S. (too many states to be listed down)

People from all walks of life, people with different experience, people from respectable Leaders and Partners of the firm to Global Talent leaders to HR Directors to Talent Managers all over the world. Also, working directly with an inspiring leader and two very experienced and kind Managers who used to be with the US, UK and South Africa firm. And the deliverables that I work on with my team gets shown to the top management of the firm. Who gets such an opportunity with one year of experience in the working field?

If God has not given me this opportunity and put me in this valuable spot, I wouldn't have been able to have such an experience. Something that cannot be bought with money or hard work. It has to be because you have a relationship with someone, like how you get special privileges in life because you know someone, and in this case, it's because I know God and He knows me.

We're almost at the end of the project, the last leg of the race, wrapping things up and bringing it to the management. Recently, I feel belittled and discouraged. One of my managers told me this.

"You just have to remember that you are doing something very important that will impact the whole region and everybody in the firm".

With that, I'll end with this verse that has been on a sticky note on my desktop screen ever since changes happened a year ago. I intend to keep it there for a long, long time.

But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes;its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit - Jeremiah 17:7-8
